With the high cost of living these days, people are looking for ways to save money and cut costs wherever possible.
Chances are, you have experienced the burnout of the high cost of living yourself. I am assuming that is what brought you to this article in the first place. If that is the case, then feel free to read on and soak in as much information as you can.
#1: Use a Programmable Thermostat
Heating our homes in the winter time, and cooling them off in the summer time takes up a LOT of energy. As you already are well aware of, it costs money to fuel the energy to your home to do so.
A programmable thermostat will not only allow you to lower your electric bill by automatically changing the internal house temperature to ideal levels, but it will also give you less to worry about as your home will be at a constant state of comfort. It is a win-win!
#2: Wear Comfortable Clothing
I can’t stress this enough. Wearing weather appropriate, comfortable clothing is a surefire way to make sure you pack as much savings as you can into lowering your electric bill each month. So, next time before you reach to turn up the thermostat, try reaching for a warm fuzzy blanket instead.
If it is the middle of the summer and you are sweltering hot, grab yourself a tall glass of ice cold water and relax in some comfortable shorts and a tee shirt.
#3: Lower The Temperature Of Your Water Heater
A lot of people do not even think about their water heaters when thinking of ways to lower their electric bills, but it is an important thing to consider, especially if you live in a home that uses solely electric to heat and cool your home instead of gas.
First, take a look at your water heater setting. Chances are, it is probably set to a level that is way higher than you actually use day to day when showering, doing the dishes or giving the kids a bath.
Even though you may not be using the water at those high temperatures, you are still paying for the electricity to heat up each gallon to that temperature you have it set to on your water tank. A quick and easy fix? Simply turn down the dial on your water heater and see how it goes.
Give it a few days to experiment with. If the water is running full hot and it’s absolutely perfect, then you are all set to go and should see a difference in your electric bill. If it is still to hot, or too cold, you can go back and make adjustments as needed on the water heater. This is one of the simplest and yet most overlooked ways to save money and lower your electric bill quickly and easily.
#4: Optimize Home Efficiency With Insulation
Insulation can make or break an electric bill. Think about it… If you are heating up your entire home to 70 degrees in the middle of a winter storm with temps below zero, a well insulated house will keep that heat for a LOT longer than a house with little to no insulation would. Would you agree?
If yes, then you are one hundred percent right. Insulation helps to keep the heat inside your home and regulate the temperature, keeping it at a steady level for a longer period of time. Because many homes (especially in smaller towns in America) are older homes, they may not be as well insulated as you think.
If you are serious about saving money and reducing the cost of your electric bill long term, then hiring a contractor to update your home insulation may just be the best bet. If you are super handy yourself, or know someone who is and is willing to help, you can save even more money by purchasing the insulation and doing it yourself.
#5: Use a Bill Negotiation Service
If you are anything like me, you probably heard the words “bill negotiation service” and thought “ooof, that HAS to be expensive…” but the truth is, it is not as bad as you think.
